Are they really TPMs; Technical Product Managerš¤
How much of technicalities and product management?
Are Technical product managers (TPMs) really TPMS,
what exactly do companies mean when they say āWe need a TPMā?
Yes, you want this person to be really good in product management and at the same time you want them to be really good as a technical person š¤·āāļø
even though they wonāt get their hands dirty in the technicalities because you have your technical experts.
Hey dearies, Iqmat here againā¦
So, to what technical extent do you expect the product manager to know and
at what point do we draw the expectation lineš¤?
When I hear people say/ see their profile as a TPM, the common trend I notice is that
they are either once a developer/ programmer that wanted to do less of coding and more of business
or someone who started as a business person but developed more interest in coding/ programming side of things.
I think this role is a safe zone for someone coming from a product background and want to go deeper into technicalities
or someone coming from a technical background and want to cross over into product management.
I think itās just that safe spot where you are making the transition because
I really cannot phantom where the expectations and realities for the requirement of this role lies
and most times the job description of this role largely differs from organisation to organisation.
What do you think of this role, what has been your experience and whatās your take on the idea?
I would love to hear from you.
